Dreams and Hours Spilled
The piece is about the value of creation - specifically the meditative nature of a relatively simple, repetitive forming. Something that is usually done in the time in between the required tasks in our lives. Hands moving, building something of simple or intricate beauty. Experiencing the physical nature of the chosen material. Minds free to wander or to spin around thoughts of pattern, colour and design.
The tactile, pinch-pots, many with visible finger depressions (evidence of method and production), are primitive as well as contemporary. The vessel is a timeless human tool and art form that’s shape and art has provided us with countless stories about our ancestry as well as kept lifetimes of hands busy - some for function, some for art and many for places in between the two. Beads and wires as well as the ceramic material - with a variety of treatments and glazes - are often craft materials and are present to span lines between craft and art.
The strand of red beads is a vein or an artery and a grounding wire - the act of creation is innate. Many in modern society find themselves excluded because of judgements and hierarchies, or drawn into the many forms of passive time use, have ceased to see it as an option. If a sweater is old, or a bowl breaks, we can buy another. Unfortunately, we loose some of the peace and often community that can accompany creating. Better perhaps to have our dreams and hours spilled on pursuits of beauty then tipped into emptiness.
